The break-arch brass dial with silvered Roman and Arabic chapter disc with pierced blued steel hands, the center with calendar aperture and signed Mattw. Dutton, London, foliate spandrels, strike/silent lever above 12, the arch with subsidiary silvered chapter disc for pendulum regulation, the five pillar twin-gut fusee movment with anchor escapment and steel rod pendulum spring-suspended from the regulation bar above the plates, strike on bell, pendulum holdfast to the backplate engraved Mattw. Dutton, London No. 301, the case with handle to triple-pad top, pierced brass fishscale soundfrets to the sides and on gilt-brass block feet

Lot Essay

Matthew Dutton was apprenticed to his father, William in 1771. The latter d. 1794, apprenticed to George Graham, 1673-1751 and had an illustrious partnership with Thomas Mudge, 1715-1794. Matthew and his brother Thomas were in partnership with their father (see lot 34) and later inherited the business and remained in Fleet Street between until 1825
