[circa 1896-1898], the first ('Mon cher petit' and 'Dimanche soir'), regretting that he was out when Lucien called; he dined with Madame Straus; mentioning Madame Lemaire with whom Lucien is in high favour and suggesting another of her evenings 'qui ne sera pas brillant, mais ou il n'y aura rien, pas de musique ni autre-chose', and if Lucien is not expected elsewhere they can meet and behave as 'philosophes de couture'; but he may go out during the day to look at some apple trees; mentioning his proofs which may come any day, and in a postscript referring to Léon Daudet, and asking whether a certain Danish critic has talent, 4 pages, 8vo; the second proposing a meeting , 'Rat chéri, 10 heures ½ chez Flavie pour se voir ½ d'heure si vous n'avez rien à faire', and mentioning other engagements, 2 pages, 8vo (integral leaf torn away); the third ('Mon petit Lucien'), regretting that he has not seen him and saying that he has a sadness, 'je viens d'avoir un gros chagrin (louchon)'; if Lucien returns to Paris one evening Proust will meet him, 'je me precipiterai Gare de Sceaux ou n'importe où trop heureux de ce petit calmant à ma peine'; he is going to a burial and dining with his grandfather, giving other details, also asking if he has left a black tie ('la petite cravate noire') in the car, mentioning Flavie, and asking him to write, 2 pages, 8vo; the fourth ('Cher Lucien' and signed with initials, 'M.P.'), referring to an invitation from Reynaldo [Hahn], 4 lines in pencil on part of a leaf from a notebook (11 x 155mm); the fifth (signed 'Votre rat Marcel') changing the time of Lucien's visit because he had forgotten about Mlle St. Leger's wedding, one page, 8vo, integral blank leaf, (slight offsetting of ink, together approximately 9 pages, 8vo).
