PROUST, Marcel. Autograph letter signed ('Marcel Proust') to Lucien Daudet, n.p. [Paris], n.d. [between mid-October and mid-November 1913], sending for his opinion the possible ending of the volume, lengthening it by only a few pages, 'La seule modification à ce que vous connaissez serait que le jour de neige, les jours où je vois du soleil sur le balcon, seraient quelques pages plus haut. Et ce n'est qu'apres eux que je mettrai ... "Les jours où Gilberte ne venait pas, j'allais en pelerinage devant sa maison, ou tachais de voir passer Swann allant chez son dentiste, ou emmenais Françoise jusqu'à l'allée des Acacias voir passer Mme Swann" ', and explaining that this fragment would be placed in the passage on his walks in the Allée des Acacias, on which he will end, not as he had at first planned using it later to evoke the time when the narrator did not yet know Swann and his family, and in a postscript saying that the proofs are full of mistakes, 5 pages, 8vo.
Lucien Daudet received this letter and the new proofs at Naples, and recalled reading them aloud to his mother besides their window, from which the Castel del'Uovo could be seen (Cahiers, V, 79).
Du Côté de chez Swann, dedicated to Gaston Calmette, was published by Grasset on 14 November 1913, in an edition of 1750 copies. The passage describing the Allée des Acacias appears in the narrator's account of his walk in the Bois de Boulogne, at the end of the volume. Lucien Daudet's review appeared in Le Figaro on 27 November, occupying three columns on the front page, as a result of the intervention of Empress Eugenie. Kolb, XII, 287; Cahiers, V (IV).
