[NELSON] -- COLLINGWOOD, Cuthbert (Vice-Admiral, 1750-1810). Document signed, a General Memorandum concerning the erection of a monument to Nelson, addressed to 'the Respective Captains of H.M. Ships', 'Queen off Cape Trafalgar', 2 November 1805, agreeing in accordance with the request made to him by members of the squadron under his command to the erection 'at the General Expence of the Squadron on Portdown Hill of a lasting monument to their late Chief's memory, and great name', and instructing the captains to inform their crews that 'if approved this measure shall be adopted', with further details, one page, folio, integral leaf addressed to 'Leviathan', annotated in a contemporary hand (creased at foot).

The captains are to inform their crews that to procure a fund for 'so laudable a purpose' the sum of two thousand pounds shall be deducted out of the Prize money from the action at Trafalgar, and they are to report to him if they agree.

Nelson's monument, designed by the architect J.T. Groves, stands on the crest of Portsdown Hill, above Porchester.
