Contemporary English speckled calf gilt, red morocco lozenge gilt tooled with elephant crest onlaid to uppermost compartment of spine (slight surface damage to leather on upper cover). Provenance: Sir Andrew Fountaine (binding).
A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. The apparently incomplete plate count corresponds to the Berlin Kat. copy, and to a copy sold at auction recently (Sotheby's, 29 Nov 1990, lot 103). Berlin Kat. 1864; cf. Cicognara 3608 (calling for 52 plates).
