Large 4° (288 x 224mm). 85 engraved plates. Contemporary mottled calf gilt, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, morocco lettering-piece in one, the others with repeat elephant crest surrounded by small tools. Provenance: Andrew Fountaine (1770-1830, inscription).
FIRST EDITION, limited to 250 copies, THIS ONE OF 50 COPIES ON SUPERFINE ROYAL PAPER. A fine copy of the greatest work of Oxford's first Sherardian Professor of Botany, on the natural history of mosses, liverworts, lycopods and algae; the plates include engravings of some 600 different species. Linnaeus and his work were well known to Dillenius (he stayed with him during his visit to Oxford), and the present work is one of the earliest English botanical works to use Linnaean nomenclature.
