2° (502 x 357mm). Engraved title vignette, 24 plates, one double-page, by Domenico Francheschini after Fontana. (Title and last page somewhat soiled, some browning to about ten plates.) Contemporary English calf gilt, spine in eight compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in one, the others decorated with various small tools surrounding centrally-placed elephant-crest tool (head and foot of spine slightly chipped). Provenance: Sir Andrew Fountaine (binding).
A FINE COPY OF THE SECOND EDITION. The work includes a proposal to erect a church within the existing walls of the Colosseum. The double-page plate illustrates how an awning to provide shade may have been erected over the the arena during the time of the Caesar. Berlin Kat. 1871; Cicognara 3730 (calling for 42 plates in error).
