MEAD, Richard (1673-1754). Oratio anniversaria Harveiana.. Adjecta est dissertatio de nummis quibusdam a Smyrnaeis in medicorum honorem percussis. London: S.Buckley, 1724. 4° (286 x 225mm). Half-title. Engraved title vignette and 3 plates. Contemporary mottled calf gilt, covers with single fillet border, enclosing cornerpieces made up of small tools, with central lozenge, also made up of small tools, the upper cover with two elephant-crest tools added, spine in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece, the others with repeat decoration of small tools, g.e. (spine slightly rubbed). Provenance: Sir Andrew Fountaine (binding, later inscription: 'A present from Dr.Mead to his friend Sir Andrew Fountaine'). FIRST EDITION. The binding was possibly executed for Mead; the lozenge-shaped panel is stylistically similar to item 120, Maggs Bros. cat. 966, and appears to share three tools. The overall style is similar to the work of John Brindley. The elephants were added later.
