2 volumes, 2° (448 x 282mm). Half-titles. Two engraved frontispieces, two title vignettes, two initials, three head- and 29 tail pieces, 428 images on 214 plates (2 to a page), five double-page engraved maps (including a world map [Shirley 622]). (Very occasional light browning or spotting to about six leaves.) Contemporary Dutch mottled calf gilt, the covers panelled with centrally-placed oval of the Ark of the Covenant, watched over by an angel, surrounded by an oval of rococco foliage with two puti, spines in eight compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second, the uppermost with onlaid red morocco lozenge gilt-tooled with elephant-crest tool. Provenance: Sir Andrew Fountaine (binding).

FIRST EDITION, first issue (before the damage to the Apocalypse plate). A fine copy in what is probably the original publisher's binding. Brunet III, 200.
