Near-contemporary English calf gilt, red morocco lozenge gilt tooled with elephant crest onlaid to uppermost compartment of spine. Provenance: Sir Andrew Fountaine (binding).

A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. Severino's fame during his lifetime rested largely on his skill as a surgeon (he held the chairs of both surgery and anatomy in the university of Naples from 1615 until his death from plague in 1656). 'At his death Severino left numerous unpublished works, some of which first appeared in print posthumously. Most of his manuscripts went first to Antonio Bulifon, then Giammmaria Lancisi; they remain in the Biblioteca Lancisiana in Rome.' DSB XII, pp.332-334.
