Woodcut of putti supporting the arms of "the Great Captain" and 10 lines of verse within 4-part border on first page, title on verso, 4-part border opening dedication to Cardinal Bernaldino de Caravajal (π2r) and first text page (A1r), chapter headings on π4v, one decorative initial, printer's device on final recto, last page blank. (Tiny pinpricks in title cut, some light spotting, very discreet repairs and rehinging.) Modern red morocco, wide gilt border of exotic birds and frogs in flowering vines, gilt spine and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges, by A. Palomino Olalla, vellum and pastepaper box with leather spine label. Provenance: a few contemporary marginal annotations in Spanish (slightly trimmed).
FIRST EDITION of this epic poem on the capture of Naples by Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordoba (1453-1515), el Gran Capitán, printed only nine months after his death in December 1515. Hernández, a Spanish writer at Rome under the protection of Cardinal Caravajal, adopted the style of Juan de Mena's Laberinto de fortuna to describe events which he had witnessed first-hand. It is also of linguistic interest, since the Spanish is intermixed with Italian words, indicating the close alliance between the two languages at the beginning of the 16th century.
VERY RARE. Salva (infra 2897) could say only that it is "un poema de suma rareza" and the copy known to Elie, at the National Library of Naples, was incomplete, lacking the last two leaves. Toda y Güell records a copy at the University Library at Salamanca. See H.
