PIUS II (Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, Pope, 1405-1464). Epistolae familiares. Edited by Ambrosius Archintus and Joannes Vinzalius. Milan: Uldericus Scinzenzeler, 10 December 1496.

Chancery 2° (296 x 207mm). Collation: \k.\Ka6 a-z6 & \\j \\a6 A-C6 D8 (\k.\Ka1r title, \k.\Ka2r table of contents, \k.\Ka6v letter to the reader by Ambrosius Archintus, a1r Epistolae, D8v colophon, register, printer's mark). 188 leaves. 59 lines. Type: 4:145G, 10:80R. Ornamental woodcut initials on a1r, 3-line initial spaces, printer's device (Kristeller 96). (Very faint stain at upper inside margin.) Contemporary Italian calf over wooden boards (rebacked, worn and wormed). Provenance: 17th-century annotations in the table.

First edition edited by Archintus and Vinzalius. Archintus uses his prefatory letter as a platform to criticize the corrupt German editions of Pius's Letters (Koberger, for example, had already printed three editions), which resulted in part from the ignorance of the Germans (Germania illa latinorum nominum vocabula ignorat). He and Vinzalius have restored the letters to their original elegance and profundity. HC *157; BMC VI, 770 (IB. 26762); Goff P-721; IGI 7779.
