[VERGIL] -- Faictz merveilleux de Virgille. Paris: Guillaume Nyverd, n.d. [facsimile reprint, Paris: Pinard, 10 June 1831].

PRINTED ON VELLUM. 8° (175 x 115mm). Title woodcut, 1p. explanation of the facsimile. Contemporary brown morocco, elaborately gilt stamped to a fanfare design, monogram of A. Audenet at centre, citron morocco doublures with gilt-stamped border, marbled endpapers, by Koehler. Provenance: A. Audenet (binding, sale 1839, lot 406).

One of two copies printed on vellum, of an edition limited to 42. Two editions of this rare popularised account of the adventures of Vergil, printed by Guillaume Nyverd (fl.1510-70), are known, one with the woodcut on the title and repeated at the end, and one with the woodcut on the title only. Techener brought out a facsimile edition of the one with two woodcuts in 1831, supposedly limited to 30 copies only. The publisher of the present facsimile (reprinting the edition with one woodcut) scornfully doubts that only 30 copies were printed, and criticizes the production of the Techener edition. He invites the reader to compare the two facsimiles in order to satisfy themselves that the present one is far superior, and states categorically that only 42 copies of the present edition were printed, including only 2 copies on vellum. Brunet II: 1168.
