Lot Essay
The gardens of the villas around Rome were a favourite subject for the artist on his trips to Italy in 1906 and 1907. He also painted and sketched at the Villa Torlonia, the Villa Falconieri and the Villa Lante. Miss Wedgwood, who made up the party of Sargent, his sisters and Wilfrid and Jane de Glehn at the Grand Hotel in Frascati during the autumn of 1907, recalled the daily routine of the holiday 'breakfast generally at 7.30, afterwards work literally all day till the light failed. At rare intervals an excursion - if very hot a siesta after the midday meal, but work was the order of the day'.
