The present work is an early treatment of the subject of barns and barn interiors which were to dominate Clausen's oeuvre for the next thirty years. The boy with a winnowing fan in the foreground, first seen in The Farmer's Boy in 1895 (private collection), was a common motif which culminated in the Golden Barn series from 1901 (Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and Rochdale Art Gallery).
