Hilary Pyle (loc. cit.) comments of this work 'A man sits in shadow, elbows on his knees as his hands support his chin, looking through the open window down into the street. The darkness of the attic is contrasted with the sunlight of the street, whose houses are framed by the window.

The title is of significance, as are the bars on the dark little window, through which the man's face is transformed by the light outside. The attitude of the watching figure may be compared with that of the man planning an expedition, before a window open to the landscape'.
