Lot Essay
From 1893 to 1895 Renoir rented a studio in the Château des Brouillards on the top of the Butte Montmartre. Jean Renoir described it: "our house at the Château des Brouillards was number 6 in the row of dwellings at 13 Rue Girardou. It had two upper floors, plus the attic which had been transformed into a studio. The garden, about fifty feet by seventy-five, had rose bushes in it and a fruit tree." (J. Renoir, Renoir My Father, London, 1962, p. 247).
The garden of the Château des Brouillards is most likely the setting of Deux fillettes dans le jardin de Montmartre. It was painted at the same time as the nearby construction of Sacré Coeur.
A preparatory drawing and an oil sketch for the present work are extant (see illustration).
Deux fillettes dans le jardin de Montmartre will be included in the forthcoming supplement to the Renoir catalogue raisonné currently being prepared by François Daulte.
