CHARITY AUCTION FOR MUSEUM HET REMBRANDTHUIS Het Rembrandthuis at the Jodenbreestraat in Amsterdam was Rembrandt's home and studio between 1639 and 1658. Almost ninety years ago the museum was founded in this house where Rembrandt executed so many of his great works, including The Nightwatch and where he pulled the proofs of his etchings at his press. In order to accomodate a growing number of visitors and to provide room for the frequent exhibitions of works by Rembrandt and his circle, the Museum has acquired the adjacent property. This will enable the Museum to fulfil its longstanding wish to restore the house to its former, 17th Century state. The aim of the Charity Auction organized by Christie's is to raise the necessary funds for the restoration. Many people have contributed generously to this charity sale. In the first instance I would like to thank the members of the Committee of Recommendation. Their assistance and dedication have been vital in assembling the works of art for the auction. His Excellency the Ambassador of The Netherlands and Mrs J. H. R. D. van Roijen have been extremely supportive. Their hospitality has given the Rembrandthuis the opportunity to present its plans for the future and for the charity auction to the British press. Most of all I am indebted to the wealth of private collectors, dealers and artists around the world who have contributed so generously to this sale. Their support has provided a great stimulus in our aim to restore Rembrandt's old studio to its former glory.
