Lot Essay

The present statue has traditionally been associated with the circle of Claus Sluter, and is undeniably the work of a sculptor profoundly influenced by his work. It need not necessarily have been carved in Burgundy, however, and another possibility is that it is a Lower Rhenish production of around 1430 in the style of the Hakendorfer Altarpiece.
