Lot Essay

The present relief, which must originally have formed the front of a cassone, is decorated with a marine triumph dominated by the central figure of Neptune brandishing his trident. Although the elongated figure canon is suggestive of the School of Fontainbleau, it is perfectly possible that the present piece was carved in Italy.
