This elegant animal, though Egyptian, possibly reflects the influence of Persian art in Egypt during 4th Century B.C. An almost complete figure of a lion devouring a hoofed creature shows the majesty of the sculpture of this period, cf. W. Seipel, Das Vermächtnis der Pharaonen: Meisterwerke aus der Ägyptisch-Orientalischen Sammlung des Kunsthistorischen Museums, Wien, 1993, pp. 242-6, nos 152-3; and catalogue Egyptian Museum Berlin, 1990, pp. 120-121, pl. 62 for a fragmentary monkey.
