A fine Achaemenid silver phiale
Late 6th/early 5th Century B.C.
Of shallow form, the interior tondo with central omphalos around which radiates an elegant repoussé garland of five lotus buds alternating with five open lotus flowers each with chased petals, enclosed within a moulded circular border around which are thirty-two deeply lobed petals with chased details on the exterior wall, the broad everted rim with chased head of a snarling lion with tongue extended in profile to the left
