Lot Essay
Etienne II Lenoir (1699-1778) became maître horologer in 1717. Established in the Quai des Orfèvres, he was joined by his son, Pierre-Etienne in 1750.
An almost identical model with dial and movement signed by Etienne Lenoir was sold by order of the Executors of the late Samuel Messer, Esq. in these Rooms, 10 December 1992, lot 12, while another very similar clock, also signed on the dial and backplate by Etienne Lenoir, was sold anonymously, Christie's Monaco, 7 December 1985, lot 6. A further cartel clock of the same model, but with the movement signed by Gosselin, was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 1 July 1976, lot 14 and one with the movement signed by Thiout Antoine l'Ainé is illustrated in Tardy, French Clocks the World Over, Paris, 1981, 5th ed., vol. I, p. 301.
