Lot Essay

This console desserte, with corner shelves a l'anglaise, has a serpentine-ended and reed-banded top enriched with husks. This, together with the inset columnettes with striated-flute capitals, the drapery-festooned shelves and base enriched with pearl-framed tablets all feature on a sideboard or commode a l'anglaise bearing the stamp of Pierre Roussel, maitre 1771 (F.J.B. Watson, Louis XVI Furniture, London 1960, fig. 40). However, the same marble border and fluted columnettes feature on a related console table that, in the 1930's was displayed in the Palais Rothschild, Vienna, which has been attributed to Bernard Molitor (U. Leben, Molitor, London, 1992, p. 21 and cat. no. 86).
