A FAMILLE ROSE PORCELAIN ARMORIAL SOUP-PLATE FOR THE MEXICAN MARKET
circa 1790
Enamelled with a central medallion comprising a turetted building between two winged supporters enclosed by the inscription 'Angelis Suis Deus Mandavit De Te Ut Custodiant Te In Omnibus Viis Tuis' below a crown and within a leafy wreath, all enclosed by the inscription 'En Su Feliz Proclamacion La Ciudad De Los Anceles [sic]' and above the date 'A 17 De Enero De 1790', the border with six small flower sprays linked by an undulating band below a narrow blue enamel band at the foliate rim, rim frits and minor chips

Lot Essay

The design for the service is after one of at least six medals struck in Mexico by Geronimo Antonio Gil between 1789 and 1791, to commemorate the accession of King Charles IV to the throne of Spain. The inscription on this service refers to the proclamation of the accession in Los Angeles (a city in Mexico now known as Puebla) in 1790. The milk-jug from this service is in the Mottahedeh Collection, illustrated by where the authors state that examples from three of the six known services of this type are in the Mottahedeh Collection
