A CANTONESE POLYCHROME-DECORATED LACQUER FAN

The black and gold lacquer box of waved rectangular form decorated with Chinoiserie figures in an extensive landscape and enclosing a foliate painted rice-paper lined interior, the sixteen spines of the fan painted with mythical beasts and figures in a garden and supporting a pleated paper fan painted with a central vignettes depicting the Praya Grande at Macao to one side and Hong Kong harbour to the other side, flanked by courtly Chinoiserie figures
The box 13½ in. (34.5 cm.) wide; The fan 11½ in. (29 cm.) high
Lot Essay
Painted in Canton in the 1860's, such lacquer fans were fashionable souvenirs often brought back by those involved in the East India companies.
