Depicting Capitano, his cloak over his shoulder and left arm gesturing, his sword by his side, Columbine in a long dress with ruff neck, one hand to her face and the other hand outstretcherd and Pantalone with hunched back, clasping a dagger, each on ebonised bow-ended moulded rectangular plinth

Lot Essay

The enduring popularity of the Commedia del'Arte genre was greatly enhanced by Goldoni in late 16th Century Venice. Like those manufactured in porcelain at the Meissen factory by Johann-Joachim Kändler in the mid-18th Century, these figures were probably inspired by Luigi Riccoboni's celebrated book of engravings, L'Histoire du Théâtre Italien, published in Paris in 1727.
