Lot Essay

This pearl was found at Manihiki atoll in the Northern Cook Islands of the South Pacific by a native cook islander free-diving for mother-of-pearl in 1969 and has remained in his family until very recently.

Being one of the important examples in recent times, this naturally coloured, black pearl is notably rare. With records indicating that the last four important black pearls were recovered during 1960.
