Saint Elizabeth of Portugal distributing Alms

The present picture is a modello for Daniel Gran's altarpiece, datable to 1736/7, in the Karlskirche, Vienna (E. Knab, Daniel Gran, Vienna/Munich, 1977, p. 178, no. Ö37). Begun in 1713, the Karlskirche, dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo and built to fulfil a vow taken by Emperor Charles VI during the plague of 1713, was completed in 1737. Among the other decorations made for the church is Sebastiano Ricci's last major work, The Assumption of the Virgin (J. Daniels, Sebastiano Ricci, Hove, 1976, p. 150, no. 52b, fig. 354).

Another modello, of almost identical dimensions, is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (Die Gemäldegalerie des Kunsthistorischen Museums in Wien. Verzeichnis der Gemälde, Vienna, 1991, p. 64, pl. 651).
