Lot Essay

Publishing this picture for the first time in 1993, Dario Succi dated it early in the artist's brief career, c. 1734/5. A copy is in the Muzeum Narodowe, Warsaw (Succi, loc. cit., fig. 42); published by Toledano as autograph (R. Toledano, Michele Marieschi. L'opera completa, Milan, 1988, p. 122, no. C.3, illustrated; idem, Michele Marieschi. Catalogo ragionato, 2nd ed., Milan, 1995, p. 134, no. C.3.a, illustrated), its derivative status was already recognized by Succi before he rediscovered of the present painting (D. Succi, La scuola, i seguaci in the catalogue of the exhibition Marieschi, tra Canaletto e Guardi, Castello di Gorizia, 30 June-15 Oct. 1989, pp. 221-2, fig. 280, colour; Succi, loc. cit., 1993, fig. 42).
