Lot Essay

For the attribution see the portraits of Carlo di Borbone and Maria Amalia di Sassonia (N. Spinosa, Pittura napoletana del Settecento, Naples, 1987, pp. 128-9 and 285, no. 175, pl. 215 and 216).

The sitter became Duke of Lorraine in 1729, Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1737 and Emperor in 1745. He married Maria Theresa in 1736.
