Lot Essay

In the first picture Palazzo Grassi is shown under construction; begun in 1748, it was completed in the late 1760s. Another painting by the Master shows a related view before construction had begun (see the catalogue of the exhibition Mythos Venedig: Venezianische Veduten des 18. Jährhunderts, Stiftung Langmatt, Baden, 8 June-31 Oct. 1994, pp. 82-3, no. 17, illustrated in colour).
