Lot Essay

A similar but slightly less elaborate mirror of this profile and basic twin-phoenix design is illustrated by M. Rupert and O. J. Todd, Chinese Bronze Mirrors, no.76, also dated to the Tang Dynasty. This example, from the Todd Collection, lacks the delicate pairs of feeding songbirds, which provide a carefully-spaced balance to the larger single birds at the sides.
