A STRAW-GLAZED POTTERY CENTRAL ASIAN DANCER
tang dynasty
Modelled in mid-dance with his left leg slightly bent, body swayed, left fist raised to shoulder height and right hand extended at chest height, wearing a heavy beaded necklace above his bare torso and loose robe draped around his waist and shoulders, his hair thick and curly, supported on a flat octagonal base, lower part restored

Lot Essay

The result of thermoluminescence test, Oxford, 566k71, is consistent with the dating of this lot.

Compare the painted pottery dancer in the Eumorfopoulos Collection Catalogue, vol.I, London, 1925, pl.XXXV, no.197, illustrated by R. L. Hobson; and another comparable example, which was included in the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, 1994 Exhibition, Tomb Treasures from China, The Buried Art of Ancient X'ian, Catalogue, p.72, no.54.
