Small boxes of this type are well-known and widely published. One of the most common and attractive designs is of fruiting sprays, with the fruits carved with various diapers; others have matched designs, as in the present lot, with a figural subject on one part and a blossom or fruit spray on the other. See Sir H. Garner, Chinese Lacquer, pls.64, 65 and 66 for examples of all three types, all dated to the 16th Century, and respectively in the public collections of the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm, the British Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
