17TH CENTURY, THE TOP PANEL LATER

This piece of furniture was originally caned and would have served as a day-bed, ta, similar to the Luohan beds, luohanchuang, but without the three-panel screen railings. Such day-beds are illustrated by Wang Shixiang in Classic Chinese Furniture, London 1986, plates 120ff.
