The Northbrook Papers The following twenty-five lots comprise an incredible find of Treasury Essays, Cancellation Removal Trials and related material from the Northbrook family archive. All the items relate to Francis Baring, then Chancellor of the Exchequer responsible for the Treasury Competion, and later created Baron Northbrook. The section is arranged in three sections: Treasury Competition Essays, including four unrecorded letter sheet essays; Cancellation Removal Trials, including unrecorded strips of eleven and eight of the V.R. 1d. used for the "White of Egg" and "Varnish" trials, pairs of the 1840 1d. used for comparison of the Maltese Cross and circular date stamp cancellations; Letters to the Chancellor, including reports, in the first few days after 6 May, of apparent deficiencies in the newly incepted postal system and suggestions for its improvement. This section provides a unique opportunity to obtain previously unrecorded items that have not been seen for over 150 years. Treasury Competition Essays
