Proof V.R. 1d. black, a horizontal strip of eight lettered PE-PL with selvedge at right showing part inscription "ent.", PF, PH, PJ and PL were coated with an unidentified type of varnish and then each stamp in the strip was cancelled by a fine complete strike of the red Maltese Cross, the reverse of the strip inscribed in ink "(irit?) Varnish" and "the alternate stamps will come off with soap and water"; four have vertical creases but in no way detract from this beautiful and stunning exhibition item. Photo
