cover 1840 (10 May) entire letter from Thomas Brighouse to Francis Baring endorsed "post paid" and "under ½ ounce" and showing clear "HOLYWELL" despatch backstamp of 10 May 1840 (first sunday), affixed inside the letter are a pair from plate 1a lettered AG-AH which show surface rubbing, possibly in an attempt at removal of the cancellation, and which the writer states "are not sufficiently disfigured to prevent their being used again", he then suggests that the new stamps would be better printed in "Light Red and Light Blue and defaced with Black Ink" adding that the black composition is also much more readily available than the red. A fascinating piece of postal history and possibly the earliest recorded acknowledgement of the shortcomings of the colour schemes in use for printing and cancellation. Photo for letter heading
