Lot Essay

Born in Feodosia in the Crimea of Armenian ancestry, Aizazovskii was sponsored by the Academy of Arts and sent to Western Europe to broaden his studies. In 1842 in Italy he met J.M. Turner, who was so impressed by the young artist's talent that he composed a poem in his praise. Although recognised as the greatest Russian maritime artist, he painted a large number of landscapes especially during his extensive travelling in the Ukraine and the Caucasus between 1850 and 1870. His paintings depticting Ukranian landscapes have often a similar horizontal perspective giving to the artist the possiblity to show his ability to depict the light of the sky in the most amazing way.
