La Légende de Joseph, a one act ballet of the Biblical story, was first performed by the Ballets Russes in Paris in 1914. The ballet was set in the Venice of Paolo Veronese, hence the zoccoli and open-skirted costume of the present pictures. These designs for costumes for Ladies in the Suite of Potiphar's Wife were commissioned by Diagilev himself in Berlin in 1914. They were intended as promotional drawings for the forthcoming London season of the Ballets Russes in the Illustrated London News. It is likely that they were executed by Ernst Stern. The inscription of Bakst's name was done with the artist's approval and that of Diagilev as recalled by Bakst's nieces, Mesdames Basacq and Tsipkevitch, who worked in Bakst's studio.
