Lot Essay

Devis is thought to have visited Italy in 1783-4 with William Assheton of Cuerdale Hall (died 1833), who was probably one of his pupils. The present watercolour is a typical example of the media he most frequently used - pen and grey-blue washes.
Devis exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1761 and 1781 and made a number of sketching tours in Scotland, the Lake District and Wales.
