Lot Essay

This magnificent panorama of Plymouth is taken from Empacombe, possibly near Thanks House. The whole extent of the dockyard, from Gun Wharf to Mount Wise is described in detail, with the Mount Pleasant redoubt visible beyond the windmill in the centre of the composition, and the fortifications and signal station on Mount Wise visible opposite Obelisk Hill to the right. Another version of the same view, but taken from a lower viewpoint, and with a riot of foliage, rocks and butterburr in the foreground and a sloop lowering her sails, was included in David Japes, William Payne, A Plymouth Experience, Exeter, 1992, no. 36.
The compositions can be dated to circa 1788-9.
