This grey-wash drawing is in keeping with the watercolours Hearne produced for the engraved plates of The Antiquities of Great Britain, produced between 1777 and 1781 in conjunction with the engraver William Byrne. A further view of Framlingham Castle depicting the entire castle was engraved for the publication. It has not been possible to ascertain whether the present watercolour was also engraved.
