Lot Essay

Both Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-1828) and Thomas Shotter Boys executed a number of versions of this view. One version by Bonington, dated 1827, was sold at Christie's London, 11 November 1997, lot 120 (13,800). A further version attributed to Bonington, is recorded in J. Roundell, Thomas Shotter Boys, London, 1974, p. 72. After the appearance of the watercolour, sold last year, the attribution of the version illustrated in Roundell has been questioned and the suggestion is that it is by Boys.
Boys and Bonington were constant companions at this time and frequently painted the same view.
