Lot Essay

William Henry Millais was the elder brother of Sir John Everett Millias, Bt., founder with Holman Hunt and Rossetti of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and later President of the Royal Academy. The two are known to have collaborated on a few pictures, and W.H. Millais exhibited several of his own works at the Royal Academy and the New Watercolour Society between 1853 and 1892. A painter of landscapes and watercolours, his reputation has perhaps been unfairly overshadowed by that of his brother.
