Lot Essay

With Charles Edward Wilson (see lot 119), with whom he shared a model and a studio in London, Carlton Alfred Smith moved to join the artistic cummunity founded by Myles Birket Foster and Helen Allingham in the villages surrounding Witley in Surrey. It has been suggested that the present watercolour depicts the artist's wife, also a painter, in the garden of their Surrey house.
