Shaped oblong and with gadrooned, shell, acorn and oak leaf border and with two scrolling foliage bracket handles, the centre engraved with two coats-of-arms and two presentation inscriptions, marked on the reverse and stamped MAPPIN & WEBB. LTD

H.R.H. Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone (1883-19 ) was the only daughter of H.R.H. Prince Leopold, 1st Duke of Albany (1853-1984), 4th son of Queen Victoria. She married H.S.H. Prince Alexander on Teck, later Major-General The Rt. Hon. The Earl of Athlone K.G. (d.1957) in 1904. Lord Athlone was Govenor-General, Commander-in-Chief and High Commander of the Union of South Africa from 1923 to 1931.
