The sitter (1707-1778) was the eldest son of John Wood of Copmanthorpe and Hollin Hall, North Yorkshire, and his wife Frances, daughter and heiress of John Nicholson of York (for whom see lot 5), and brother of Mary and Richard Wood (for whom see lots 6 and 12). He married Rachel (1721-1787), daughter of John Paul Freeman of Ellerton Abbey, Yorkshire, by whom he had three sons, Richard, Charles and Hutton, and two daughters, Elizabeth and Christiana. He assumed the name of Boynton, which was the name of his wife's step-grandfather, Sir John Boynton, of Rawcliffe.
