Lot Essay

Eliza Wood (1777-1840) and Delhia Maria Wood (d.1840) were the eldest daughters of Richard Wood of Hollin Hall (for whom see lot 13) and his wife Delia, only daughter of Thomas Schaak of Askham Bryan, near York. Eliza died unmarried while her younger sister Delia, married Hugh Blaydes of Ranby Hall, Nottinghamshire, High Sheriff of Nottingham in 1812, in 1800. This picture has traditionally been attributed to Gilbert Stuart.
